Trees at mile 2 road crossing
There’s something magical about cycling through an outdoor path in the woods. The rhythmic hum of your tires against the pavement, the fresh scent of the forest, and the sounds of nature create a symphony that only nature can compose. Every time I set off on my road bike, I’m reminded of how much this activity contributes to both my physical and mental health. I’ve been riding along the Santos paved trail (paved multi-use trail at the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway) since the summer of 2019. Since then, I’ve logged 9,405 miles on my Trek bike, roughly the roundtrip distance from Ocala to Anchorage, Alaska. And I’ve lost over 50 lbs.
Cycling on these quiet, tree-lined paths offers a sense of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere. It's more than just a workout – it’s an opportunity to disconnect from the stress of daily life and reconnect with the world around me. Pedaling through the woods provides a low-impact, full-body workout that strengthens my muscles, improves cardiovascular health, burns calories, and boosts my stamina.
Mentally, the experience is equally transformative. There's something therapeutic about being immersed in nature. The sight of dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, the sound of birds singing, and the occasional squirrel, deer, or gopher tortoise along the path, all combine to create a calming effect that clears my mind and reduces stress. After a long ride, I feel refreshed, both physically and emotionally, as though I've left behind any worries or distractions.
Cycling isn’t just about fitness; it’s a holistic way to nurture well-being. Whether it’s the deep breaths of fresh forest air or the endorphins that come from pushing myself through a tough stretch, every ride is a reminder of how much our bodies and minds benefit from time spent outdoors.
In this photo of my bike, just off the pavement near mile two, you can almost feel the beauty and serenity that the path offers, the invitation to take a break, breathe deeply, and just ride. For me, road cycling through the woods is more than a hobby – it's a commitment to my health, my peace of mind, and my overall wellness.
